WMF Wächtersbach Teapot Stand for sale

This is a round, metal and ceramic teapot stand, made by the German manufacturer WMF during the early 20th century. The transfer pattern is in a subtle, blue-grey with a dark, central motif. Around it all is a pattern of small, red-brown diamond shapes.

This teapot stand would have been part of a range of tableware and available in several transfer patterns. This pattern has elements of Art Nouveau and Art Deco and is not in their 1929 catalogue. The pattern is possibly referenced by the "15222L" on the base.

These teapot stands were generally available in two sizes (about 6 and 8 inches across), with or without balled feet and also with or without the metal gallery border. This is the smaller version with a border but no feet.

How old is this WMF Teapot Stand?

The running ostrich makers mark, with "WMF" and "G" beneath (for Geislingen, the home of WMF), suggests that it could have been made between 1903 and the 1930s. The ceramic  base was probably made by Wächtersbach Keramik but there is no mark for that. This type of stand is featured in their 1929 catalogue but not in the 1906 catalogue.

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In good condition
  • No chips or cracks
  • The metal is tarnished with one spot of corrosion
  • The metal border is slightly out of shape
  • The ceramic base has crazing and some scratches on the underside
  • The patterned side is in much better condition
  • Near the border is a series of short, parallel stains
  • The maker's mark is worn at the edges

What are the measurements of this WMF Teapot Stand?

  • 15.5cm diameter (about 6 inches)
  • 2cm high (0.75 inches approx.)
  • 230 grams
