Art Nouveau Jugendstil serving trays for sale

This is a pair of small, round, metal and ceramic coasters, stand, or serving trays, intended for a bottle and a glass. The blue and brown transfer decoration is a beautiful example of Art Nouveau.

The delicate, organic design contrasts with the stronger, no nonsense style of the metal border. To our eyes, the appearance is more German or Austrian than French or Italian, but we have not yet identified the maker.

The ceramic base is edged by a metal gallery border with narrow vertical slits and a circle with the quarters removed; hints of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The metal parts are probably polished nickel.

Who made them and when?

The pattern is referenced by "1848" on the underside of both pieces. The smaller coaster is also impressed with '8011'.The maker is unknown to us, however, the style is from late 1800s to early 1900s.

  • 1848 (the pattern number) is on both pieces
  • 8011 on the bottle stand (probably identifying the form or shape)

What condition are they in?

  • Second-hand
  • In very good condition
  • No chips or cracks in the ceramic
  • The metal is tarnished and stained in places
  • The metal has a couple of spots of corrosion and a couple of tiny dents

What are the measurements?

  • The larger coaster is about 11cm in diameter (just under 4.5 inches) and weighs 115 grams
  • The smaller coaster is 7.4cm in diameter (3 inches) and weighs 58 grams
  • Both are 2.5cm high
  • 174 grams in total
