What's for sale?
This is a small and slender, pressed glass celery vase by the well regarded Belgian Glass maker Val Saint Lambert.
The style is typical of the 1930s Art Deco period and was designed by Charles Graffart and René Delvenne for Val St. Lambert's "Luxval" range. This design is "Marcelle" and listed in their 1935 catalogue. The Luxval range was Val St Lambert's response to competitors like Walther and Stolzle, to produce unique Art Deco glass at more affordable prices. Most of the moulds have since been destroyed.
The body of the vase is horizontally ribbed, with near full height, draped "wing" handles. Below these bands is a semi-circular pattern, through which four pairs of vertical lines pass. At the top, under the rim, the word "CELERY" has been faintly etched on the inside. In addition to clear glass, the design was produced in pink, amber and peach colours.
Charles Graffart produced many of the modern Val St. Lambert designs which were exhibited at the famous "Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes" held at Paris in 1925, from which the expression "Art Deco" came.
