A rare, metal tin from 1930s Germany, with an unusual, pivoting, roll top lid and Art Deco style, sprayed stencil pattern. Second-hand.
An Art Deco 1930s German Metal Spritzdekor Biscuit Tin for sale
This is a quite rare, metal tin from 1920s or 1930s Germany. Boxes of this size were usually made for biscuits and this is particularly unusual because of the pivoting, roll back lid and the spray-painted stencil design in blue and gold.
The cream paint on the front, sides and rear has been textured to resemble leather and the handle and the edging of the sides would originally have had a polished, brass finish.
The maker is unknown, the impressed D.R.G.M (Deutsches Reichs Gebrauchs Muster) on the underneath was an indication of a patented German design, in use on metal and sometimes ceramic items from the 1890s to early 1950s. We have seen only one other example of this tin, in a completely different metallic green background and a simpler, gold and red pattern, which was not stencilled. These simple tins are actually harder to find than the metal and ceramic biscuit boxes (see for example WMF Wächtersbach biscuit box).
