A Victorian, Sterling silver scent bottle holder with original scent bottle. Second-hand.
What's for sale?
This is a Victorian, Sterling silver perfume or scent bottle holder with fitted, period, glass bottle.
The silver has been decorated with a pretty, floral pattern and has an unsigned cartouche on the front.
It's hallmarked for 1899 at the Birmingham Assay office. The bottle is possibly the original: it's a good fit, and is embossed with "Grossmith London", who are one of Englands oldest perfumeries, dating back to 1835.
Who made it and when?
It was made by Birmingham silversmiths Arthur Wilmore Pennington, around 1899. The hallmark reads:
- Initials "AWP"
- An anchor (the mark for Birmingham)
- An italic "z" which style represents 1899
- A Lion Passant (the Sterling silver mark)
What condition is it in?
- Second-hand
- In very good condition
- There is a some rippling in the cartouche
- The bottle and stopper are undamaged
