What's for sale?
This is a Staffordshire tureen, or serving dish with lid, made at the Windsor pottery in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. It's decorated with a classic, blue and white transfer pattern.
The maker's mark on this piece is interesting. In 1911 the Co-operative Wholesale Society of Manchester began using the Windsor pottery to produce good quality, affordable tableware for their working class customers. And from the 1940s onwards, this pottery also produced the Windsor Bone China and Clarence Bone China ranges. While there are many documented examples of those later marks, this dish appears to have an earlier amalgamation of the two. Surrounding a crown, it reads:
- WINDSOR CLARENCE
- LONGTON
- MADE IN ENGLAND
This is a nice piece of old tableware for display, but it's still a usable piece of tableware. We recommend hand washing only, so avoid the dishwasher and avoid immersing in very hot water.
What condition is it in?
- Second-hand
- In good condition
- There is minor pitting in the glaze on the inside of the bowl and underside of the lid
- There is faint crazing all over
