What's for sale?

This is a sterling silver sweetheart brooch from the late 1800's

It's a traditional design comprising a silver heart with engraved scroll work, a silver branch threaded through it, all entwined by a leaf and flower. The flower has a pale, rose-pink tint to it.

Sweetheart brooches were popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and particularly during the First World War. They were given to any loved one that they were leaving behind, including wives, children and parents. As their popularity increased, jewellers began to produce them as well.

This is a very sweet design, and the silver looks great on a dark coloured scarf or lapel in particular.

The marks on it read as follows :

  • An anchor (for the Birmingham assay office)
  • A Lion Passant (the sterling silver mark)
  • An italic "x", which style matches 1897-1898

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In good condition
  • The pin and clasp work perfectly

What are the measurements?

  • 4.5cm in length
  • 2.5cm wide at widest point
  • 5 grams
