What's for sale?
This is a set of five, cut-to-clear, crystal wine glasses, each overlaid in one of five colours: amber, green, burgundy, purple and blue. They were made by the renowned Belgian glass maker Val St. Lambert and the crystal has been cut in their Berncastel pattern.
The Berncastel pattern is a cut which shows off their high quality. Alternating around the bowl are foliage and cross-hatch panels of various sizes. Below that is a faceted stem, a faceted knop and a foot with a radiating pattern of straight cuts. This pattern was introduced around 1959 and has been out of production for some time.
The stems of crystal wine glasses are one of the first things we look at when determining the quality of manufacture and these are as very nice indeed. These are hand made and there is usually very slight differences in height.
Cut-to clear describes the technique of layering coloured glass over clear glass and then cutting a pattern to reveal the clear glass beneath. Tiny bubbles are sometimes visible in the coloured layer.
