Vintage Ceramic Suze Ashtray
This is a round, ceramic, branded advertising ashtray, made in France at the Orchies Moulin des Loups pottery, for the French aperitif brand Suze.
It was intended for everyday use and with three cigarette rests, perfect for a small table in a bar, hotel or restaurant. These days branded ashtrays are great-looking ornaments for desks and side tables and really handy for all those little things which haunt our lives.
Suze is a well-known French brand of bitter liqueur, flavoured from the roots of the Swiss plant Gentian. It's still made today and drunk as an aperitif or in cocktails. We find it to be an acquired taste and the key word for us is 'bitter'.
An Orchies Moulin De Loups ashtray
It was made by Orchies Moulin des Loups in the north of France, near the border with Belgium. Their well-known maker's mark is printed underneath: a windmill, circled with the words:
- orchies
- france
- moulin des loups
- nord (beneath the windmill)
The number "878.28.09" is probably a manufacturing code.
A vintage, second-hand Suze ashtray
- Second-hand
- In good condition
- No cracks
- A small chip or fault in the top surface of the glaze (see photo)
- There is a manufacturing fault on one of the Suze transfers and another small fault to the left of it (see photo)
- There is crazing noticeable on one side of the inside and on the underneath (see photos)
