What's for sale?

This is a small, 1950s, laminated cardboard, advertising wall sign for the popular French drink St Raphaël (available as St Raphaël Rouge and St Raphaël Ambré).

The design from 1953, is by Charles Loupot and was used up into the 1960s. It is widely regarded to be the brand's most iconic poster: two waiters facing forwards, one red and one white, like the two versions of the drink itself. The St Raphaël brand name and 'quinquina', the herb used to make it, are in a strong yellow.

On the back is the maker's mark: TABLEAU "LAKOÏD". R.PLAS. PARIS

This example is unfortunately missing the glass thermometer from the left hand side, although the upper mount and the lower, metal safety cage for the mercury are still in place. The rear-mounted, metal hoop hanger is also present.

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In fair to good condition
  • There are a several scratches and small dents on the front
  • The thermometer is missing, but the top mount and safety cage are present
  • Traces of red, probably mercury from the thermometer, have stained the front
  • On the back are a variety of stains, rust marks, paint splashes and nicks in the paper
  • The colours are bright and the graphics are clear

What are the measurements?

  • 24.5cm high (just over 9.5 inches)
  • 19cm diameter (7.5 inches)
  • 161 grams
