A small, 750ml or 1.5 pint, handblown jug made from uranium glass, also known as Vaseline glass. Second-hand.
What's for sale?
This is a small, straight-sided, handblown jug with a capacity of 750ml or 1.5 pints.
Beneath the slightly-flared rim, the top half of the body is shaped with 14 faces, while the bottom half is horizontally-banded.
It is an early to mid 20th century design, made in Vaseline glass, also known as uranium glass.
Uranium glass is so called because of the inclusion of minuscule amounts of Uranium Dioxide during manufacture. It's harmless and no more radioactive that than most other things in our homes; the glow under UV light is a chemical reaction to the light, rather than radioactivity.
It's a collectable type of glass which fell out of general production during the 1950s. This jug's fluorescence has been tested under UV light, as shown in one of our photographs.
