This is a small, opalescent glass bowl by the admired French designer Pierre D'Avesn.
It's a moulded piece of glass, formed from a pattern of overlapping leaves with bold, slightly-curved veins. The rim is scalloped, like a lotus flower.
The photographs against the dark background emphasise the opalescence. This type of glass changes its appearance as the light falling on it changes, the result of the glass cooling at different rates, according to its thickness and causing differences in crystallization. Sabino and Lalique are probably the most well known for this type of glass.
Pierre D'Avesn was the pseudonym of Pierre Girre (1901-1984), the well-regarded sculptor and glass designer, who worked through most of the 20th century, and for most of the famous glass makers. He joined Rene Lalique at only 14, producing many designs over the 11 years he worked there, before going it alone and producing designs under his chosen name.
