A set of six tall, Nachtmann Traube, cut-to-clear, multi-coloured, lead crystal wine glasses. Second-hand.
What's for sale?
This is a set of six tall, cut-to-clear, lead crystal hock wine glasses in six colours. They're by Nachtmann, the high-quality German glassware maker.
Traube (grape) is a pattern of grapes, leaves and geometric cuts which denotes the high quality of Nachtmann's glass cutters. They're made of 24% lead crystal and have an intricate, faceted stem and star-cut foot.
At just 20cm high, we think these are the best of the range. The bowl is shaped to bring the best out of German white wine (Hock is an English term for such wines), but we use them regularly and for most types of wine.
Cut-to clear describes the technique of layering coloured glass over clear glass and then cutting the pattern to reveal the clear glass beneath. This is a sought-after set in six different colours.
A similar pattern, called Marsala is produced by Hungarian maker Ajka.
Who made them and when?
Nachtmann is a long-established, German manufacturer of lead crystal, based in Weiden, Bavaria. The Traube pattern has been made for over 70 years. That and the durability of their crystal, means that it's difficult to date manufacture precisely.
