This is a large and impressive, French pewter tureen, or lidded serving dish, in the country house style. It was made by the French company La Maison de l'Etain (the House of Tin).
This is a very nice, old piece of tableware for display, and is still usable. Originally it would probably have come with a matching platter to catch spills. The marks on the base of the tureen read:
This pewter has a 95% tin content and is safe for food use. Pewter doesn't tarnish as easily as silver and can be washed with hot water and detergent. Avoid the dishwasher. Polishing is down to each person's preference, but we like the finish on this piece as it is.
