This is a beautifully-made piece of studio pottery from Jane Hamlyn: a salt glazed jar with fitted lid.
The colour is a beautiful, graduated mix of brown and pale green, and the jar is decorated with nice details of scribed lines, notched roulette patterns and punched holes. The cylindrical handle is reminiscent of a bow or wrapped sweet.
Jane Hamlyn is a highly regarded and widely exhibited British potter and a recognized expert in the use of salt glaze, which is the textured, multicoloured finish produced by adding salt and other ingredients into the kiln during the high temperature part of the firing.
Who made it and when?
It was made by British potter Jane Hamlyn. She was born in London and has been producing pottery from her South Yorkshire studio since 1975. Her work is highly regarded, winning acclaim and awards throughout Europe. Her "JH" mark is embossed near the base.
