A mid 20th Century, blue, glass soda siphon from Sheffield. Second-hand.
What's for sale?
This is a British, mid 20th Century soda siphon in sky blue glass. It was made for everyday use in bars, restaurants and clubs, and this bright colour would have made it really stand out.
It has a smooth body in very thick glass, because they were pressurised and had a hard life. Etched on the front is a shield containing the the words:"J.F. EARDLEY LTD, ECCLESALL, MINERAL WATER WORKS, SHEFFIELD". Underneath that is "BRITISH SYPHON CO. LTD. LONDON".
The clear glass tube inside is present and intact. The all-metal top is engraved on one side "SOUTHANS LTD" and on the other "BRITISH SYPHON MFG LONDON". The tops are notoriously difficult to remove without the right tools, but this one isn't seized and can be removed by hand.
The tops are composed of a threaded, usually lead, collar in two halves. Only a small part of the collar is visible but it needs to be held tightly while the main part with the spout is slackened off.
Siphons were used in cafes, bars and hotels around the world, particularly during the first half of the 20th century. They were reusable and had a hard life, but eventually became too expensive to use. Of course now, because of the branding and coloured glass, they're a very collectable branch of branding and advertising.
