What's for sale?

This is a large, impressive, Ironstone pedestal bowl made in the early 20th century.

It's decorated in an Imari-inspired pattern called "Amherst Japan", comprising flowers, leaves and inside, a pagoda and gravel path. The pattern here is a less detailed version of Minton's original and has elements of "Gaudy Welsh" about it.

It's a nice bowl, and the clay on the outside is also impressed with a looped pattern in the shape of a horseshoe.

"Amherst Japan" is named after Lord Amherst (1773-1857), the successful British diplomat who was envoy to Beijing and later, the Governor General of India.

These bowls are often attributed to Minton, after pieces made in the mid 1800s. However, the "Made in England" mark on the base dates it much later, somewhere between 1910 and 1940. We can't identify the maker.

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In fair to good condition
  • There is a large firing fault, a pit and discolouration, on the inside of the bowl

What are the measurements?

  • 13cm high
  • 24cm in diameter
