A jug made from green, Vaseline or uranium glass with an applied cranberry glass handle. Second-hand.
What's for sale?
This is a large green jug with a beautifully-shaped base and an applied, cranberry-coloured, glass handle.
The main body is banded horizontally and the neck is fluted vertically. The base is concaved slightly. It's well made and the shape is very even. We can't tell whether it was hand blown or blown into a mold. There a a few air bubbles here and there, the majority around where the spout was formed.
It's also a good size, with a usable capacity of over three pints (it's 2 litres to the brim).
This type of glass is known as Vaseline or uranium glass. Uranium glass is so called because of the miniscule inclusion of Uranium Dioxide during manufacture. It's harmless and no more radioactive that than most other things in our homes; the glow under UV light is a chemical reaction.
This collectable type of glass fell out of general production during the 1950s, so this jug was probably made earlier than that. Its fluorescence has been tested under UV light, as shown in one of our photographs.
