What's for sale?

This is a large, Edwardian, oval serving platter with a rich green and white transfer pattern called "Rothesay". It's a useful size at 16" long and 11.5" across (40cm by 29.5cm).

The Rothesay pattern is composed of green scrolls and flowers with a large heart at the centre. The scalloped edge is highlighted in gold.

Large platters are an excellent way to present food and are perfect for Christmas dinner. Old china tableware can continue to be used and enjoyed, but it shouldn't be put in a dishwasher or left immersed in hot water. Wash by hand with warm water and washing-up liquid.

Who made it and when?

It was made by F. Winkle & Co at the Colonial Pottery in Stoke, England. The pattern's registration number on the base was registered in August 1904 and the maker's usual monogram is absent, so we believe this was made between 1904 and 1910. The maker's mark reads:

  • rothesay
  • Rd. No. 440343 (the design's registration number in Britain)

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In good condition
  • No chips or cracks
  • There's some pitting in the glaze
  • There's a little wear on the gold edging

What are the measurements?

  • 29.5cm width
  • 40cm in length
  • 1346 grams
