What's for sale?
This is an original, stoneware, mineral water bottle for EP Shaw & Co Ltd of Wakefield in Yorkshire. It was made by the famous Denby pottery of Bourne in Derbyshire and is from the late 19th or early 20th centuries.
EP Shaw & Co Ltd were a large producer of various mineral waters and sodas, going back to the late 1860s. The transfer print displays their trade mark dog, which was a feature of their much earlier glass bottles. They also produced soda siphons. The impressed "Denby Bourne" mark is on the rear of the bottle.
Bottles like these were produced in large numbers, with shapes, colours and branding helping to differentiate the brewers and water companies. They were mass-produced and roughly made. Many will have firing faults, rough patches and imperfect printing. They were made to be thrown away, and most of those around today will have been recovered from out-of-use, Victorian rubbish tips. Some bottles were sealed with a screw top, but this one and most others had cork bungs.
