What's for sale?
This is a medium-sized vase, made during the 1960s by Dümler and Breiden of Germany.
The decoration is a series of horizontal grooves which score the matt brown finish and reveal a lighter colour beneath. A handful of vertical grooves have also been cut into the four wider bands at top and bottom. These wider bands have then been washed over with green, yellow and beige. The interior has a high gloss, dark brown or black glaze.
This appears to be a rarer example of their work as the base is unglazed and it's quite hard to read the maker's impressions of 250 (the form number) and 20 (the vase's height).
Who made it?
Dümler & Breiden was founded in 1883 by Peter Dümler and his brother-in-law Albert Breiden near Koblenz in Germany. The factory was one of West Germany's leading producers of ceramics during the 1950s and 60s.
They produced a wide range of high quality products, using white clay with quirky styles and colours. The company closed in 1992. We think this piece was made during the 1960s at the height of their popularity.
